The Ramblers are a popular Dutch dance/jazz band formed in 1926. Before World War II they toured extensively through Holland, Germany and Belgium. Between 1935 and 1964 they were heard in more than 3000 Dutch radio broadcasts and made more than 560 recordings. Guests on some of their recordings included Coleman Hawkins, Benny Carter and the Mills Brothers. In the World War II period they were forced by the Germans to play for their New Order program. Most of the songs were sung in Dutch because the Germans wouldn't allow swing and jazz numbers in the English language (this habit continued a few years after the war). Being forced to work for the Germans resulted after the war in an official ban, however after a short period they were cleared of charges of collaborating with the enemy. The band resumed their role being the most popular Dutch dance/jazz band and could be heard many years in their weekly radio show for the Dutch radio association V.A.R.A. The band still exists and are celebrating their sixties year in show business next year!
