Exactly what you need if you aren't sure what to do. This page is divided into Sections.
If you are new to OTR, please read from top to bottom. If you are a seasoned OTR collector but new to the site, skip down to the Section "Navigating the Website" |
Section 1 |
|
Old Time Rado "OTR" recordings have been archived by many people using technology developed over the years, and has evolved several times during that period.
Therefore, what was considered a good "medium" 5-10 years ago is now obsolete and much has been "re-encoded" onto new medium. This encoding process takes analog sound waves and digitizes them. So a single episodes is compressed into a fraction of it's original size. I won't attempt to get into the pros and cons, or the technology involved, but it's best to be aware of what you see on websites. They may not be analog recordings which may limit you to what you can use to listen with. |
All of my OTR recording are archived in MP3 format. This is the digital format used today as the standard for Websites. Your equipment must be able to play MP3 files. PC's can easily do this using Sound software like Windows Media Player. If you want to listen away from your PC, You will need a portable MP3 Player, such as those found at Walmart and Electronic Stores like Best Buy. |
Many OTR Collectors, like myself, will
also provide the service of creating standard Audio Cassettes, and Audio CD's from their collection. Please avail yourself to that section to purchase analog versions of my shows. But I strongly urge you, if you are going to amass a quantity of Shows, to consider buying a MP3 player. |

Section 2 |
Navigating Dadsotr Website |
|
I realize that I have many visitors who are "computer challenged" . That's ok. Every Website is designed differently and learning the roadmap for all these sites can be a brain drainer. Everyone would like to know where to go to find something or search for it. Then get it. It's all here in this Section. Please read it !! |
Dadsotr was
designed for me, and by me. The reason is I wanted a location for everything, be able to find it when away from home, and archive it so it as accurate as I could make it. I enjoy certain shows at certain times and so dividing my collection into categories or "Genre's" made the most sense for me.
So the buttons on the left of the main page take you straight to the Genre' pages where I have my collection stored. These Genre' pages are the only pages which contain "Add to Cart" Buttons for purchasing Shows in MP3 format on CD. Other collections and compliations are available on their own pages. |
Finding what you want |
Finding what you want can be done several ways and going in several directions.
If you know
the Title of the Show, Go the A-Z Section at the top of the Main Page. I have divided the A-Z section into 3 pages: A-F ; G-O ; P-Z. For Jack Benny, you would select the G-O link. A Window will pop up (if you use pop up software to block popups you may miss this part. disable it while visiting my site. I pay for the site to be commercial free so you won't see ads coming from Dadsotr)
This window will list all the show titles under the range of Letters you
selected (G-O).
Now scroll down to find Jack Benny. Left click on your mouse and another window pops up. This is called the Show window and lists important info. It tells where in the collection I have Jack Benny, the catalog CD#'s I use to store it on, how many episodes I have, and a link called "episodes" or "Disk 1, Disk 2", etc. which pop up another window which lists the episodes in the collection. Make a note where the collection is stored. In this case Comedy (Comcd 25-29). You can browse through the episode lists, although only 1 window of lists will be shown at a time.
IMPORTANT! Sometimes a window will disappear behind another. Check your browser bar at the bottom of the page and you will see it again by clicking on it. This affects the PayPal shopping cart as well which will be described later |
Now that you know where the Show is, let's go there. Close all the windows except the main page to clean up your viewing area.
Go to Comedy, scroll down to Comcd 25-29. And there it is. Clicking the title opens the same info screen you just saw and is the second place to access Show Windows. However the last box to the right is the place to buy the show. It says add to cart.
Clicking on the left mouse button while pointing to this button will open a screen and will show Jack Benny selected for purchase, the price and the option to continue shopping. Select Continue Shopping. (You may get a message asking if you want to view "non-secure" items. Select yes. Paypal is secure and the non-secure items are my Logos.) IMPORTANT! Sometimes a window will disappear behind another. Check your browser bar at the bottom of the page and you will see it again
by clicking on it. Browser security settings reek havik on the shopping cart as well. If your security setting are set too high, you may not be able to access your shopping cart. This is a function of the browser, not my site |
PayPal or Credit Card |
Paypal
used to require membership accounts in order to make a purchase and this is not required anymore on my site. It is the only way I can accept plastic. However, PayPal is a trusted site I use and pay for to protect your info. I can't even access your info. The functions of paying for your order from the shopping cart are ALL done from PayPal's site. I can't process credit cards without them. A portion of your payment is paid by me to PayPal to process your order, just like any other credit card merchant, but PayPal is more known in the Internet and isn't a fly-by-night outfit. It's owned by Ebay. The disappearing Shopping cart. You can also use the non-paypal credit gateway. It's your choice ! |
Paying by Check or Money Order |
Not a problem. But the shopping Cart you created when selecting shows can still be used to pay my mail. If you practice copying and pasting using your left and right
mouse buttons, you can easily Click the "View Cart" button on the main page at the top, then left click, drag the selections to highlight them, right click on them and select copy, then click on the email button on the left of the main page to send me an email. Of Course, If this is too much and you just can't get this to work PLEASE JUST EMAIL WITH WHAT YOU WANT. I'll do the leg work for you. All your selections and including total can then be right mouse clicked and pasted into
the email to me. Then just print it out and send the payment. The address is listed at the bottom of the FAQ page. Here is what it would look like |
Practice, Practice, Practice. Allways check the Shopping cart for duplicate selections. I may not allways catch them and you might end up with multiple copies of a CD. Under the QTY section of the Shopping Cart you will see the number 1. If you don't want want 2 or more, you can easily change this to 1 and then
select update cart. The new total will also be corrected. |
I hope this helps some of you. I have spent countless hours creating a friendly easy to read site.
It has some flaws, so if you find a dead link, let me know. There are over 600 pages in here and it's getting bigger and harder to know what all of them are doing. I hope the site becomes a valuable resource for you. And as time moves on, you will see the information pages being updated to show factoids about the shows and about the collection so you can make smart choices.
Thanks and Enjoy!!!
