civil rights anthology.
History: The series appeared on Chicago radio station WMAQ in 1948. It was written and produced by Richard Durham-an accomplished black writer with numerous credits, and directed by Homer Heck and Dick Loughran. Many of the lead performers were also black.
Despite being locally produced with a limited budget, Destination Freedom achieved the status of becoming one of the most important shows of the day. The showed pressed for equality and rights for Negro Americans, inequalities that lead to the civil unrest of the 1960s in the American south. The show originally dramatized lives of early black Americana, and dramatized historical events such as the story of Harriet Tubman and her involvement in
the Underground Railroad. |
