A CANTICLE FOR LIEBOWITZ: a science-fiction serial that was adapted by John Reid for radio, from the novel of the same name written by Walter Miller, Jr.
The series was aired in fifteen 30-minute episodes, in three parts, on WHA in Madison, WI (and NPR stations.) The series was directed by Karl Schmidt, and narrated by Carol Collins. Greg Fish, Bob Budney, and the Edgewood College Chant Group provided the music.
The story begins 500 years after nuclear devastation left civilization in ruin. An order of monks survives in an abbey in the American southwest, and dedicates their lives to preserving pre-war scientific texts. The
story is divided into 3 parts: the first part begins approximately 500 years after the nuclear holocaust with the discovery of evidence proving the sainthood of the Blessed Leibowitz, followed by part two at about 1100 years, which witnesses growing nationalism in North American, and at 1800 years, Part 3, with the approach of a second nuclear war looming on the horizon.
The story is often slow paced, following the style the original novel. The BBC produced a 90-minute
adaptation in 1992 that only covered only the first 2 parts.
