Background: While still in their teens, Sam and his brother Jack started
contributing to the family income through their collective talents. Edna wrote the scripts and father Jack playing the adult male roles, and the family spent nine months broadcasting The Adventures of Sonny and Buddy in San Antonio and Shreveport, La. One of the earliest serials ever broadcast on radio, this weekly program was about two young boys who ran away from home and traveled with a medicine show. Every week the program featured Sam and Jack singing popular songs.
